There are several tips and tricks every photography novice should learn before picking up their camera. Discover how you can make the most of your new hobby.

Whenever I start a new hobby, I always feel like I have to be a pro right from the start. I’ll go out of my way to learn all the lingo and purchase every tool I might need to succeed. However, no matter how much prep work I do, becoming an expert at something right away is next to impossible.
For all the beginner photographers out there, remember to keep this in mind. The chances are good you won’t have your photos published in the New York Times. But that’s not to say it can’t happen! If you want to make the most of this new pastime—and possibly turn it into a career—familiarize yourself with these important photography tips for beginners.

Determine What Equipment You’ll Need
Don’t feel like you have to drop an entire paycheck on camera equipment. I know buying new items can be fun, but you don’t want to go overboard until you determine just how much time and effort you’re ready to dedicate to this new obsession. You don’t have to have the best DSLR camera on the market to take fabulous shots. In fact, start with your smartphone—you’ll be surprised to find you can take some great, high-quality photos. The more photos you take, the better idea you’ll have of what sort of camera you may want and what additional equipment, such as tripods or specific lenses, will be most helpful.

Learn the Basics
As with any new hobby, learning the ropes can be overwhelming at first. That’s why I recommend starting with some articles focused on certain camera features or topics like the difference between microfilm and microfiche. You may even want to check if there are any local photography 101 courses. A well-informed instructor will be able to provide the proper support and teach you all the rules you’ll need to know.

Take Your Camera Everywhere
I love taking photos no matter where I am Whether it’s a family beach day, I’m out on a walk, or I’m taking a self-portrait to post on Instagram, I get a thrill from capturing memories. For those who are just joining the photography world, take your camera or use your smartphone to snap some shots on a regular basis. If you do decide to take a photography class, this is a great chance to put what you learn to use. Practice makes perfect, so set daily reminders for yourself or schedule a specific date to check out a new area or event to take photos of.

Revel in the Learning Process
One of the great things about photography is that it’s a never-ending opportunity to explore the world around you. Plus, there’s always something new to learn, so read all the articles and books you can; you’ve already started with these important photography tips for beginners. I also suggest watching some photography documentaries and attending galleries with local photographers—follow inspiration no matter where it takes you.
